What skills, knowledge and attitudes constitute a healthy lifestyle? What are some simple strategies for promoting healthy habits that will help children and teens maintain healthy lifestyles into adulthood?
A good diet combined with moderate physical activity can help your child or teen maintain a healthy weight, improve self-esteem and decrease the risk of serious illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease. A healthy lifestyle also promotes a better outlook, increases energy and reduces stress. In addition, research studies suggest that youth who enjoy sports and exercise when they are young tend to adopt healthier lifestyles and stay active throughout their lives.
As a parent or caregiver, you can model nutritional eating, exercise and healthy lifestyle choices. Eat and exercise with kids and teens so they can see for themselves what you value and learn from your good habits. Provide lots of encouragement for young people, but refrain from using shame when they do not make good choices or meet all of their goals. Be open with young people and willing to talk, even about difficult topics such as substance abuse or early sexual activity.
