Promoting Internet Safety

Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-line
The Internet has changed the way children learn. If not used effectively and safely, however, it poses risks for youth. The Hi-Line Club has been proactive in hosting an Internet safety course to help youth and their parents learn how to use the Internet and remain safe while doing so. Rather than use scare tactics, the Club emphasized the benefits of supervised online use.
Parents learned that teenagers are particularly at risk because they often go online unsupervised and are more likely than younger children to participate in online discussions regarding companionship, relationships or sexual activity. Participants in the safety session learned about online bullying, chat room risks and how to maintain online anonymity.
By helping youth use the Internet effectively and safely, the Hi-Line Club is developing youth who are well-equipped to travel the cyberspace highway.
