A Recipe for Strengthening Families
Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh
Learning to navigate a foreign culture is a daunting challenge. Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh, Wisc., is helping Hmong families meet that challenge in the kitchen. By offering cooking classes that emphasize American fare, the Club teaches families how to bring tasty elements of American culture to their kitchen tables.
The Club’s efforts with Hmong families are designed to strengthen the entire family. Parents learn cooking and survival skills. Youth participate in knitting, crocheting and drama classes. Fathers and older males enjoy funeral and wedding chanting sessions. Teenage boys get a vigorous workout with their break-dancing classes and everyone is encouraged to participate in computer groups.
The Club reaches potential Club participants through the local Hmong radio station. By using a medium that families support and trust, rather than simply passing out fliers and hoping families will come, the Club demonstrates its intention to be an active partner with the Hmong community. With a smorgasbord of activities designed to enlighten, engage and educate family members, the Club is helping Hmong families learn more about their adopted homeland and each other.
“Ua tsaug” echoes throughout the Club. Thank you, indeed!
