Collin County Club Focuses on Fathers
Boys & Girls Clubs of Collin County

Fathers are not an optional part of the family puzzle. Healthier fathers contribute to healthier families. The Collin County Club hosted a “Taking Care of Our Fathers” forum to highlight prostate cancer awareness. Topics included facts and myths related to prostate cancer, background on how prostate cancer affects families and information on how to recognize the symptoms of prostate cancer. A prostate cancer survivor spoke to participants and gave them first-hand information on his successful fight against the disease. The forum concluded with a free, on-site cancer screening. Half of the men who participated in the forum were tested that day.

In addition to the cancer screening, the Club also offered free blood-pressure exams, glucose screenings, cholesterol testing and colon screening. By recognizing that the traditional stoicism of men may prevent them from seeking early medical intervention, the Collin Club is bringing the concerns of fathers to the forefront.
