Promoting Positive Self-Esteem
Self-esteem refers to the value and respect a young person has for herself or himself. Having high self-esteem helps youth think positively, deal better with challenges, resist peer pressure and motivate themselves to work hard. Low self-esteem can contribute to problems such as depression, substance abuse and eating disorders. Here are practical ways to promote self-esteem in your daughter or son:
- Be a role-model for positive self-esteem.
- Acknowledge your own strengths and the ways you feel good about yourself.
- Let your child know that you love him, care about what’s important to him and are interested in his life.
- Listen to your child.
- Let your child know that his thoughts and feelings matter to you.
- Spend time with your child doing the things that are important to him.
- Encourage him to try new activities, and give him a chance to learn by doing.
- Believe in his abilities, and let him know that you believe in him.
- Demonstrate your confidence in your child by acknowledging what he can do well.
- Accept and respect your child for the individual he is.
