Banking and Money
There are many options for managing your money. Many people choose to put their money in an account in their name at a bank, savings and loan association or credit union. The advantage of having a bank account is that it’s safer than carrying cash and it helps you keep track of your money. A checking account allows you to use checks to pay your bills or make a purchase, and a savings account allows you to save the money you’re not using and earn interest on it.
Social Security and Work
Everyone living in the United States needs a social security number. You need this number to do many things: get a job, open a bank account or get a driver’s license.
- Applying for a social security number. Contact the Social Security Administration for information about how to apply. If you do not yet have an immigrant visa, the Social Security Administration has a new process that allows people 18 years and older to apply for a visa and a social security number at the same time. Visit SSA’s Immigration Web site for more information.
- Visas and other documentation. The United States Immigration Assistance Center also provides information on U.S. citizenship, visas, green cards and the green card lottery.

- Getting legal assistance. If you need help understanding immigration laws or applying for legal status, visit the American Immigration Law Foundation.
Insurance and Medical Care
The United States does not give medical care for free to all residents. If you have no health insurance coverage, you have to pay for your own health care when you need it, and this can be very expensive. Health insurance protects you and your family in case you need expensive medical care. For more information about health insurance and medical care, visit RapidImmigration.com.
