As of 2002, 11.5 percent of the total population was foreign born, the highest percentage in 70 years.

An excellent online resource for families new to this country is Foreignborn.com. This site provides resources and information for entering and living in the United States, including banking, credit cards, health insurance, medical care, social security and work visas, schools, car buying, drivers’ licenses and careers.

Banking and Money
There are many options for managing your money. Many people choose to put their money in an account in their name at a bank, savings and loan association or credit union. The advantage of having a bank account is that it’s safer than carrying cash and it helps you keep track of your money. A checking account allows you to use checks to pay your bills or make a purchase, and a savings account allows you to save the money you’re not using and earn interest on it.

Social Security and Work
Everyone living in the United States needs a social security number. You need this number to do many things: get a job, open a bank account or get a driver’s license.

Insurance and Medical Care
The United States does not give medical care for free to all residents. If you have no health insurance coverage, you have to pay for your own health care when you need it, and this can be very expensive. Health insurance protects you and your family in case you need expensive medical care. For more information about health insurance and medical care, visit RapidImmigration.com.
