School Success: Helping Your Child

Health & Well-Being
School Success
Your Child's Future

Students whose parents are involved in their education have fewer behavior problems and better school performance.

Homework Help and Tutoring
BGCA offers Project Learn, which reinforces the skills and knowledge youth learn at school. One component is Power Hour: Making Minutes Count , a homework help and tutoring program that gives youth a time and place to get help in completing their homework. Check with your local Club to see how to get your child or teen involved.

Related BGCA Programs
BGCA offers two hands-on programs – Skill Tech: Basic Training and SkillTech II – to teach youth basic and advanced technology skills. Ask at your local Club about how your child or teen can get involved in these training programs.

Making Homework Time Easier
Here are some general guidelines for helping your child with homework:

  • Make sure he has the supplies he needs: writing paper, pencils, erasers, an assignment book and a dictionary. (If you can’t provide these materials, check with the teacher or school guidance counselor about sources of assistance.)
  • Help your child get organized and plan his time to complete assignments.
  • Encourage good study habits: avoiding last-minute and turning assignments in on time.
  • For books and information resources, check with the school or public library.
  • Sit down with your child and help him schedule homework time into his daily routine.
  • Remove distractions by turning off the television and discouraging telephone calls.
  • Be available in case your child needs help.
  • Talk about the assignments.
  • Review completed assignments and comments from the teacher on returned assignments.
  • Reward good grades with recognition and praise.

Access To Free Computer Usage
Your Club also may have a computer lab with hours for youth to have access to computers and the Internet. Other places in your community that may offer free access include:

  • business and technology centers
  • computer labs
  • community learning organizations
  • continuing education departments of local colleges
  • school districts
  • park districts
  • community colleges
  • state departments of education
